India expressed strong optimism on Friday about finalising a comprehensive economic partnership agreement with Oman during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the Gulf nation. The four-day trip, starting Monday, will also take Modi to Jordan and Ethiopia, focusing on strengthening trade, defence, and strategic ties.
Modi is scheduled to visit Oman from December 17 to 18, marking the third leg of his trip. Arun Chatterjee, Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, said both sides have been working diligently toward the early conclusion of the deal, which is expected to deepen economic relations and open a new chapter in India-Oman trade and investment.
Addressing reports on defence cooperation, Chatterjee clarified that Oman had retired its Jaguar fighter jets but possesses spares that may be supplied to India in the near future. India and Oman already maintain robust defence ties, including joint exercises, training, and maritime security collaboration in the Indian Ocean region.

Trade and investment form a key pillar of bilateral relations, with the India-Oman trade volume for 2024-25 estimated at USD 10.61 billion. Multiple joint ventures in Oman highlight growing economic integration, contributing to infrastructure, industrial development, and mutual growth.
Earlier legs of Modi’s trip include Jordan from December 15-16, where he will meet King Abdullah II and engage with the Indian diaspora, and Ethiopia from December 16-17, marking his first visit to the East African nation. Talks in Ethiopia are expected to cover trade, investment, infrastructure, and cultural cooperation.
MEA officials highlighted that the visits aim to diversify trade, enhance connectivity, and identify new opportunities across sectors such as IT, agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. The India-Oman deal is viewed as a strategic milestone, strengthening India’s economic footprint in the Gulf region.
