India has said it is in active communication with US authorities to address concerns and possible difficulties faced by Indian citizens following changes to American visa policies. The revised regulations, which affect foreign scholars and exchange visitors staying in the United States, have raised concerns among Indian students and academic communities. During a media briefing on Friday, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government was closely monitoring developments related to the changes introduced by the US Department of Homeland Security.
Responding to questions about the revised visa rules, Jaiswal said that visa regulations, immigration policies, and related procedures are sovereign matters decided by individual countries. “We’ve seen some reports regarding the visa rules. Visa rules and visa functions and immigration matters are sovereign functions of any state,” Jaiswal said, while outlining India’s position on the issue. The spokesperson said the Indian government was maintaining communication with relevant US authorities to understand the implications of the changes and work towards addressing concerns involving Indian nationals.
He added that New Delhi continues to monitor the situation and remains engaged on matters affecting Indian citizens abroad. The updated US visa framework has reportedly created uncertainty among international students, researchers, and exchange visitors who rely on American institutions for education, training, and academic opportunities. Indian students form one of the largest groups of foreign students in the United States, making any changes to visa policies a matter of significant interest.

The revised rules are expected to influence how foreign scholars and exchange programme participants manage their stay in the US. Universities, academic institutions, and student groups have been closely watching the impact of the changes, particularly regarding residency periods and compliance requirements. India has consistently raised issues affecting the welfare and mobility of its citizens abroad through diplomatic channels. The government has advised Indian nationals to remain informed about regulatory changes and follow official guidelines issued by host countries. The latest discussions come amid the broader importance of India-US educational and people-to-people ties.
Thousands of Indian students travel to the United States every year for higher education, research programmes, and professional training, contributing significantly to academic and economic exchanges between the two countries. While visa policies remain under the authority of the US government, India’s engagement with American officials reflects efforts to ensure that changes are implemented smoothly and do not create unnecessary difficulties for Indian citizens. The External Affairs Ministry said it would continue to track developments and provide assistance wherever required.
