Western Iceland was plunged into darkness on Wednesday as a total solar eclipse swept across the region, briefly turning daylight into night and creating a dramatic spectacle for residents and visitors. Total darkness descended over Keflavik, located around 50 kilometres (30 miles) southwest of the capital Reykjavik, at 5:47 pm (1747 GMT), according to an AFP journalist at the scene. The eclipse occurred as the Moon moved directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light from reaching parts of the Earth's surface. During totality, the Moon completely covers the visible disk of the Sun, causing daylight to fade rapidly and producing a distinctive period of darkness.
The phenomenon is among the most striking events in astronomy because its effects can be experienced over a relatively narrow path across the planet. In Keflavik, the sudden disappearance of daylight marked the moment the eclipse reached totality. The change was particularly noticeable because the event took place during the evening hours, when the Sun would normally still provide natural light. For observers positioned within the eclipse's path, the Moon's shadow can transform the surrounding landscape within a matter of minutes, creating conditions that resemble night even though the event occurs during daytime.
However, thousands of people who had gathered hoping to witness the eclipse were left disappointed by Iceland's weather. Heavy cloud cover blanketed parts of western Iceland, blocking direct views of the Sun and Moon. While the darkness associated with totality could still be experienced, the clouds prevented many spectators from seeing the eclipse itself. For eclipse watchers, clear skies are crucial because even a short period of thick cloud can obscure the most anticipated moments of the event.

Solar eclipses occur when the Sun, Moon and Earth align in such a way that the Moon's shadow falls across the Earth's surface. In Iceland, where cloud and rapidly changing weather can complicate outdoor observations, even a carefully planned eclipse viewing can depend heavily on conditions at the exact location and time of totality.
For those able to experience the darkness in Keflavik, the eclipse offered a rare encounter with one of nature's most dramatic astronomical events. As the Moon continued along its orbit and moved away from directly covering the Sun, normal daylight gradually returned. Although clouds prevented many spectators from seeing the celestial alignment clearly, the sudden darkness provided a powerful reminder that an astronomical event millions of kilometres away can produce an immediate and visible effect on Earth.
