The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced enhanced support for Afghanistan’s displaced women’s cricket team, aiming to revive their playing careers after being forced into exile. Following the Taliban’s 2021 takeover, which banned women from sports, most players fled to Australia, where they played a match in Melbourne earlier this year without their official crest. At its annual conference in Singapore, the ICC outlined a structured initiative to aid these athletes, led by deputy chair Imran Khwaja and supported by the cricket boards of India, England, and Australia.
The program promises domestic playing opportunities and engagement at major ICC events, including the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in India and the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England. Players will gain access to workshops with international coaches and interactions with fellow cricketers at these global tournaments, marking a significant step toward reintegrating the exiled team into competitive cricket.
