The Indian tricolour proudly waved atop Seattle’s iconic 605-foot Space Needle on India’s 79th Independence Day, marking the first time a foreign nation’s flag has been hoisted at this beloved American landmark. The historic event, celebrated with fervor, symbolized the deep ties between India and the Pacific Northwest.
Consul General of India in Seattle, Prakash Gupta, joined Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and other city dignitaries to raise the flag, a moment Gupta described as “no greater honour” in a post on X, accompanied by a video showcasing the tricolour fluttering against Seattle’s skyline. The Consulate General of India in Seattle hailed the event as a “historic first,” emphasizing the Indian-American diaspora’s role in transforming Seattle into a thriving tech hub.
The celebration continued at Kerry Park, where the Consulate hosted a vibrant community reception with the Space Needle, adorned with India’s flag, as a stunning backdrop. Hundreds of Indian-Americans gathered to witness the historic sight, their pride palpable as they celebrated their heritage. Dignitaries, including US Congressman Adam Smith, Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Debra Stephens, Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho, and Seattle Parks and Recreation Director AP Diaz, attended the event. Smith praised the occasion, noting, “This is a tribute to our region’s diversity and the strong India-US bond.”

In honor of India’s Independence Day, King County—encompassing 39 cities, including Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, and Bellevue—issued official proclamations declaring August 15 as India Day. Adding to the festivities, iconic Seattle landmarks like Lumen Stadium, T-Mobile Stadium, Westin, the Seattle Great Wheel, and the Space Needle itself were illuminated in the vibrant hues of the Indian tricolour. The flag also flew high at the Tacoma Dome, Tacoma City Hall, and the headquarters of Tacoma’s Police and Fire Departments, amplifying the celebration’s reach.
The event featured a cultural extravaganza, with national anthems, mesmerizing dance performances showcasing India’s rich artistic diversity, and a captivating poetic recital by renowned artist Piyush Mishra. “Seeing our flag on the Space Needle was overwhelming,” said Priya Patel, a local Indian-American attendee. “It’s a proud moment for our community.”
The celebrations underscored the growing influence of the Indian-American community and strengthened cultural and economic ties between India and Seattle, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s skyline and its people’s hearts.
