A deadly shooting rocked a midtown Manhattan office building at 345 Park Avenue on Monday evening, claiming four lives, including an NYPD officer, before the gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, took his own life. The 6:28 p.m. attack targeted a skyscraper housing the NFL headquarters and firms like Blackstone, triggering chaos near Grand Central Terminal.
Tamura, a Las Vegas resident originally from Hawaii, drove cross-country, passing through Colorado and New Jersey before arriving in New York on Monday, police said. Armed with a .223-caliber Palmetto State Armory AR-15 rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest, he entered the 44-story building and opened fire in the lobby, fatally shooting Officer Didarul Islam, 36, a woman hiding behind a pillar, a security guard, and another man. Tamura then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he killed one more person before dying by suicide in a stairwell, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported. One male victim remains in critical condition.
A former high school football standout at Granada Hills Charter High School in California, Tamura rushed for 616 yards in 2015, earning regional recognition. A resurfaced video showed him celebrating a team victory, highlighting his past as a disciplined athlete. More recently, he worked as a Las Vegas casino security guard and held a concealed firearms permit issued in 2022, alongside an expired private investigator license. Police found a loaded revolver, ammunition, and prescribed medication in his BMW, parked near the scene.

NYPD Commissioner Tisch noted Tamura’s documented mental health history, though his motive remains unclear. Speculation on social media suggests unfulfilled NFL aspirations may have played a role, given the building’s connection to the league, but authorities have not confirmed this. The investigation continues, with no prior criminal record found. Mayor Eric Adams urged calm as police cordoned off the area, warning of traffic disruptions.
