Eutelsat, in partnership with Airtel, is supporting the Indian Army’s humanitarian relief operations in flood-devastated areas of Sri Lanka by providing high-speed Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity via its OneWeb service. The deployment has allowed the Army to maintain reliable communications in regions where terrestrial networks were severely damaged or disrupted.
The connectivity is enabling round-the-clock telemedicine consultations with specialist medical teams, allowing rapid delivery of essential healthcare and emergency assistance to affected communities. The initiative demonstrates the critical role of resilient satellite infrastructure in maintaining operational continuity during large-scale disaster response efforts.
Neha Idnani, Regional Vice President for APAC at Eutelsat, emphasized the importance of secure and reliable communications in crisis situations. She highlighted that OneWeb LEO connectivity ensures organisations on the ground can respond effectively, safeguard lives, and maintain essential services under challenging conditions.

Sri Lanka has recently endured one of its worst weather disasters in two decades, with widespread flooding and landslides resulting in hundreds of deaths or missing persons, while thousands more have been affected. The Indian Army, equipped with satellite connectivity, has been actively involved in rescue and relief operations across the hardest-hit regions.
This collaboration between Eutelsat and Airtel underscores the transformative potential of high-speed satellite networks in disaster response, providing real-time coordination, telemedicine access, and logistical support where conventional communication channels are disrupted.
The initiative also highlights a growing trend of leveraging LEO satellite technology to enhance humanitarian response capabilities, ensuring rapid, efficient, and reliable connectivity in the most challenging and remote environments.
