The House Oversight Committee dropped a massive trove of Justice Department files Tuesday on the infamous Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell sex trafficking investigations, bowing to intense pressure from Congress for more transparency. But there’s a catch: most of the documents, including court filings, police body cam footage, and victim interviews, were already public, raising eyebrows about what’s still being withheld.
The release, which includes hundreds of image files, audio recordings, and heavily redacted documents, sheds light on Epstein’s controversial Florida plea deal and law enforcement’s early investigations dating back to 2005. One chilling audio reveals an Epstein employee describing “very, very young” girls visiting his home, though he couldn’t confirm their ages. Other files detail the frustration of prosecutors, with one calling Epstein’s lenient plea deal “the deal of the century”.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., met with Epstein survivors alongside bipartisan lawmakers, vowing to prevent future injustices. “We’re dialled in on this,” Johnson said after a two-hour meeting with six survivors. “Justice has been delayed for too long, and it stops now.”

Yet, political tensions are flaring. Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, slammed the release as a rehash of already-public information, accusing Republicans of misleading the public. Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., are pushing a bill to force the Justice Department to release all Epstein files, except victims’ personal details, bypassing Johnson’s control of the House floor.
The clunky rollout via Google Drive has left the public to sift through thousands of pages and videos themselves, fuelling frustration over why the Justice Department didn’t release the files directly. As conspiracy theories swirl around Epstein’s 2019 jailhouse death, lawmakers from both parties remain relentless, demanding full disclosure. “We won’t stop until justice is served,” Garcia declared.
