Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta reiterated a strict “zero tolerance” policy against drug smuggling and trafficking across the state, underscoring intensified enforcement efforts under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The comments came as police continue a broad crackdown aimed at curbing the cultivation, sale and movement of ganja and other narcotics.
Addressing the media from Vijayawada on Friday, DGP Gupta said that law enforcement agencies have acted decisively against habitual offenders, with more than 100 notorious individuals charged and detained under preventive detention provisions. The operation, overseen by the state’s Elite Anti‑Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE), has seen orders issued against offenders across several districts, including NTR, Anantapur and East Godavari, reflecting a sustained campaign against narcotics networks.
The police chief highlighted that efforts have targeted not only high‑volume traffickers but also “blade batch” local criminals who assist in the transportation and distribution of drugs. He said these measures have disrupted organised networks and helped restore public order in communities affected by the illicit trade. Gupta reaffirmed the government’s broader commitment to making Andhra Pradesh a drug‑free state.

The state’s intensified enforcement aligns with other recent anti‑drug initiatives, such as public awareness campaigns and community outreach events designed to engage citizens in the fight against substance abuse. Local authorities have also undertaken large‑scale destruction of seized narcotics in past operations, signalling a multi‑pronged approach to tackling the issue.
Senior officials point to the use of intelligence‑driven policing and inter‑district coordination as key to recent successes. The DGP stressed that sustained vigilance, combined with strict legal action under the NDPS Act, is critical to deterring both smuggling rings and associated criminal elements.
Community leaders and political figures have broadly welcomed the push against drugs, noting the importance of such enforcement in safeguarding youth and enhancing overall public safety. As operations continue, authorities plan to maintain high levels of surveillance and preventive action to ensure that gains against narcotics trafficking are preserved and expanded.
