Passengers flying through Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will face significant disruptions from January 21 to 26 due to airspace restrictions linked to Republic Day celebrations. The government issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) announcing daily airspace closures between 10:20 am and 12:45 pm, affecting over 600 flights.

The temporary suspension, lasting 2 hours and 25 minutes each day, is needed for Republic Day practice sessions, the dress rehearsal, and the main parade, including aerial flypasts along Kartavya Path. Airlines now face the challenge of rescheduling flights and managing passenger loads at short notice.

Aviation experts warn that the closures coincide with a peak travel window, as heavy domestic arrivals and international departures, including long-haul flights to Europe, operate during the same hours. This could lead to delays, missed connections, and last-minute cancellations, with ripple effects extending to other airports nationwide.

While not all flights will be canceled, most will experience timing adjustments, rerouting, or passenger transfers. Airlines may also provide refunds or alternative flights, but limited availability and winter fog could worsen operational challenges during this restricted window.

The airspace restrictions are mandated for security reasons, ensuring the safety of aircraft involved in the Republic Day flypast and protecting visiting dignitaries. Industry insiders have criticized the short notice, emphasizing that advance planning could mitigate passenger inconvenience for an annual event with a fixed schedule.

Passengers travelling to or from Delhi during this period are advised to monitor flight status closely, update contact information with airlines, and prepare for possible rebookings or delays, as the airspace shutdown will likely impact schedules beyond the capital.
