In a strategic shift ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress has renewed its focus on its own Dalit icon, Jagjivan Ram, as part of efforts to consolidate support among Dalit voters in Uttar Pradesh. The move comes after the party previously invoked the legacy of Kanshi Ram, signalling a recalibration of its outreach strategy.
As part of this renewed push, the party is organising a seminar and felicitation programme at its state headquarters in Lucknow on the eve of Jagjivan Ram’s 118th birth anniversary. The event is expected to highlight his contributions to social justice, equality, and inclusive development—core themes the party hopes will resonate with voters.
Senior Congress leaders and party workers are likely to attend the programme in large numbers. The event will also be graced by Meira Kumar, daughter of Jagjivan Ram, who has arrived in Lucknow to participate as the chief guest. Her presence is being seen as significant in reinforcing the party’s connection to the veteran leader’s legacy.

The shift in focus reflects Congress’s attempt to reclaim its historical association with Dalit leadership at a time when political competition in Uttar Pradesh remains intense. By foregrounding Jagjivan Ram, the party aims to strengthen its narrative around social equity while differentiating itself from other players in the state.
Political observers note that invoking figures like Jagjivan Ram allows Congress to present a legacy-driven appeal rooted in governance and inclusion. This could serve as a counterbalance to rival parties that have traditionally held strong influence among Dalit voters in the state.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the Congress’s renewed emphasis on its own icons signals a broader effort to rebuild its organisational base and reconnect with key voter groups, particularly in a politically crucial state like Uttar Pradesh.
