A five-year-old boy from the US state of Colorado has captured attention after spotting what he believed was an error in a pilot training manual belonging to a family friend employed by Southwest Airlines. The child, William Hines, was flipping through the manual when he noticed that two cockpit display graphs did not appear identical, even though they were meant to represent the same terrain system.
According to William, the two monitors shown in the manual “did not match at all". His mother, Amber, later explained that one of the images appeared significantly zoomed out while the other seemed zoomed in, creating the impression that there was a discrepancy. Intrigued by the difference, William reportedly spent nearly two hours carefully comparing the diagrams, examining the details with unusual focus for someone his age.
The family friend, impressed by William’s observation, passed along his findings to senior officials at the airline. The matter eventually reached the desk of Southwest Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer, Robert Jordan. While the airline later clarified that there was no actual mistake — explaining that the images depicted terrain at different zoom levels — officials were struck by the young boy’s sharp eye and curiosity.

In recognition of his enthusiasm and attention to detail, the airline invited William and his sister to its headquarters for a special VIP tour. During the visit, the budding aviation enthusiast was given an opportunity to try out a cockpit simulator, offering him a hands-on glimpse into the world of professional flying.
William, who dreams of becoming a pilot one day, frequently visits his local airport to watch planes and enjoys memorising different aircraft models. His mother describes him as naturally curious and mechanically inclined, traits that were clearly on display when he meticulously analysed the training manual — an effort that earned him an unforgettable behind-the-scenes aviation experience.
