Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary on Thursday announced the establishment of a women-only university in the state, where women would hold key positions across the institution, including among students, teaching staff and the Vice-Chancellor. The announcement was made during the launch of the ‘Samriddh Mahila-Samriddh Bihar’ campaign at Bapu Sabhagar in Patna. The proposed university is aimed at creating additional opportunities for women in higher education and leadership.

Chaudhary said the institution would contribute to women’s empowerment by providing a dedicated platform for education and leadership development. He linked the initiative to the state government’s broader focus on increasing women’s participation in education, employment and economic activity. The Chief Minister also said the transformation of Bihar that began after 2005 had continued over the past two decades, with several programmes aimed at improving opportunities for women.

Highlighting the role of the Jeevika programme, Chaudhary recalled its launch in 2005-06 and said women associated with the initiative had made a significant contribution to Bihar’s economy. He claimed that Jeevika Didis had contributed approximately Rs 1.46 lakh crore to the state’s economy. According to the Chief Minister, greater economic independence and self-confidence among women could strengthen families and contribute to the wider development of Bihar.

Chaudhary also reiterated the government’s plan to connect the homes of around 10 lakh Jeevika Didis with solar power under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. Solar panels are proposed to be installed at the homes of eligible beneficiaries, with the government expecting the initiative to reduce household electricity expenditure. The programme could also create opportunities for additional income through the use of solar energy, according to the state government.

The Chief Minister highlighted existing provisions aimed at increasing women’s representation in Bihar, including 35% reservation for women in government jobs and 50% reservation in Panchayati Raj institutions and local bodies. He also referred to several other initiatives, including the Women’s Employment Scheme, Bihar Ki Beti Startup Challenge and the Chief Minister’s PhD Fellowship for Girls. Bicycle and uniform schemes, incentives for competitive examinations, Pink Toilets and Pink Buses were among the other programmes mentioned.

The announcements made during the ‘Samriddh Mahila-Samriddh Bihar’ campaign underline the state government’s stated focus on women’s education, employment, economic participation and self-reliance. The proposed women-only university is expected to add a new higher-education institution focused specifically on creating opportunities for women. The government has positioned the initiative as part of its broader development agenda, linking women’s empowerment with the economic and social progress of Bihar.
