A 53-year-old experienced hiker, Brian Seibert, died after falling from a cliff while descending Mount Morgan in California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. Before the accident, Seibert had sent a text message indicating that he was making his way down after reaching the summit. His final known communication was received at around 7 pm on Sunday, October 4, according to reports citing the Mono County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team. He failed to return to his vehicle as expected, prompting authorities to begin a search operation.
Mount Morgan, which rises more than 13,000 feet above sea level, is located in the Eastern Sierra region of California. Seibert had attempted to climb the mountain’s North Ridge route. Search teams later confirmed that he had reached the summit after finding his name recorded in the mountain’s trail register. However, his exact movements during the descent remained unclear as rescuers began investigating his last known location and possible route.
The Mono County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team launched a multi-day operation on October 5, deploying ground crews and aerial support to locate the missing hiker. Authorities used photographs, topographical information and cellphone data to help determine the likely route he had taken. Search teams covered different sections of the mountain, including steep gullies and areas around the summit, while a helicopter and other aircraft assisted with the operation.

On October 6, an aircraft spotted an unusual object near the bottom of Grand Central Couloir, a steep gully on the mountain. Rescue personnel subsequently located Seibert’s body in the area and determined that he had suffered a fatal fall from a rocky cliff section. The difficult terrain complicated the recovery operation, requiring additional coordination among search-and-rescue personnel and aviation teams.
The recovery was completed early on Wednesday, October 7, with assistance from Friends of Yosemite Search and Rescue. The operation involved multiple teams working across challenging mountain terrain over several days. Search personnel had devoted extensive time and resources to examining the area, using aerial observations and information gathered from Seibert’s phone to narrow down the search.
The incident highlights the risks associated with hiking and mountaineering in rugged alpine environments, where steep terrain and difficult descent routes can pose serious challenges even to experienced climbers. Authorities and rescue teams have repeatedly emphasised the importance of careful route planning and preparation for mountain conditions. Seibert’s death has also drawn attention to the difficulties search teams face when locating missing hikers in remote areas of the Sierra Nevada.
