C P Radhakrishnan, sworn in as India's new Vice President on Friday, officially took charge as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. The ceremony began with Radhakrishnan paying floral tributes at Prerna Sthal in the Parliament House complex, a site dedicated to India’s eminent leaders, freedom fighters, and social reformers.
He was warmly welcomed by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Harivansh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and Deputy Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, reflecting the significance of the occasion.
Radhakrishnan, a seasoned politician and former governor of Jharkhand, proceeded to the Rajya Sabha chairperson’s office, where he signed official documents to formally assume the role of presiding officer. As Vice President, he serves as the ex-officio chair of the Rajya Sabha, tasked with overseeing its proceedings and maintaining parliamentary decorum. The Union Home Ministry issued a notification confirming his assumption of the vice president’s office on September 12, 2025.

Radhakrishnan’s appointment comes at a crucial time as the Rajya Sabha prepares for its upcoming sessions, where key legislative agendas will be debated. His extensive experience in public service, including his tenure as a two-time Member of Parliament from Coimbatore and as governor of multiple states, is expected to bring stability and insight to the chair.
The event was marked by a sense of continuity and reverence for India’s democratic traditions.
