The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday released its first list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma set to contest from the Jalukbari constituency. The list includes a mix of veteran politicians and recent entrants from other parties, reflecting the party’s strategy to consolidate its position ahead of the polls.
Notably, former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi will contest from the Dispur assembly seat. Bordoloi formally joined the BJP on Wednesday in the presence of Sarma and other senior party leaders, marking a significant political shift in the state.
Another former Congress leader, Bhupen Kumar Borah, will contest from the Bihpura seat after recently joining the BJP. The party has also fielded Madhavi Das from Birsing-Jarua, Jyotsana Kalita from Chamaria, and Nilima Devi from Mangaldai, indicating an effort to balance experience and fresh faces across key constituencies.

The first list of candidates was finalised by the BJP’s Central Election Committee during a meeting chaired by party president Nitin Nabin on Wednesday evening. The high-profile meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other senior members of the party’s poll body.
BJP Assam unit chief Dilip Saikia was also present at the meeting, which set the tone for the party’s campaign strategy in the state. Party sources said the list aims to leverage both the popularity of incumbent leaders and the influence of newcomers to strengthen the BJP’s electoral prospects.
The Assam Assembly elections are expected to be a key political contest, with the BJP seeking to retain power and counter emerging challenges from rival parties. The announcement of the first list sets the stage for intensified campaigning and seat-by-seat strategies in the weeks ahead.
