The Australian government has announced that it has secured additional diesel shipments to strengthen national fuel reserves amid ongoing global volatility, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday during a briefing in Sydney. The Prime Minister confirmed that four diesel shipments have been arranged in coordination with energy companies BP and Viva Energy. These include two shipments from South Korea and one each from Brunei and Malaysia, collectively amounting to around 200 million litres of diesel, aimed at reinforcing Australia’s domestic fuel security.
Albanese said the government has been actively working to safeguard fuel supply chains at a time of heightened global uncertainty, particularly linked to geopolitical tensions affecting energy markets. He also reiterated Australia’s support for de-escalation efforts in conflict zones, including the Middle East, where instability has raised concerns over shipping routes and energy flows.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen stated that the shipments are expected to arrive in Australia between late May and early June. He described the additional supply as a “buffer” that will strengthen the country’s strategic fuel stockpile and improve resilience against potential disruptions in global supply chains.

The announcement comes ahead of a scheduled meeting between the Prime Minister and state and territory leaders on Thursday, where fuel security will be a key agenda item. This marks the third such discussion since tensions escalated in the Middle East, underscoring growing concern within the government about long-term energy stability.
Earlier, Albanese also noted Australia’s positive stance on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, while indicating that the government would consider requests related to military support for securing international shipping lanes if required. Officials have emphasized that Australia continues to monitor developments closely while increasing its strategic fuel reserves as a precautionary measure.
