The Consulate General of India in Houston hosted a vibrant celebration of India’s 79th Independence Day on Friday, drawing a large gathering of the Indian diaspora despite the early hours of a workday. The event, filled with patriotic zeal, highlighted India’s unity, resilience, and global achievements.
Consul General D. C. Manjunath led the ceremony by hoisting the national flag and delivering the President of India’s address, emphasizing the nation’s progress and cultural pride. An exhibition on the history of the Tiranga, part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, encouraged attendees to honor the national flag in their homes.
The event was elevated by the presence of distinguished guests, including India’s astronauts, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, fresh from a recent space mission, and Group Captain Prashanth Nair. They were joined by Ajay Singh, Press Secretary to the President of India, and Dr. Renu Khator, President of the University of Houston. The astronauts, warmly received by the diaspora, engaged with the community by taking photos and selfies, creating cherished memories.

Other notable attendees included Katherine Ho, Regional Director of the Office of Foreign Missions, U.S. State Department; representatives from the offices of Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz; representatives of the Mayor of Houston and precinct commissioners; and Council Member Sanjay Singhal, representing the Mayor of Sugar Land.
A cultural program showcased India’s rich heritage, featuring a classical Odissi dance performance by senior dancers of the Mayor Dance Academy and a medley of patriotic songs by students of the Gandharva School of Music. The Consulate also felicitated winners of a painting and essay competition organized for children of the Indian community.
“It’s a moment we will always remember,” said one attendee, reflecting the pride and joy of celebrating India’s independence abroad. The event underscored the Indian diaspora’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while celebrating India’s global contributions and achievements.
