Members of the Raijor Dal staged a protest near Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's official residence in Guwahati on Thursday, raising concerns over the government's response to the recent floods. The protesters carried black flags and raised slogans while demanding greater relief and compensation for families affected by the flooding. A heavy police presence was deployed in the area as the demonstration moved towards the Chief Minister's residence.
The protest was led by Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, who has been demanding increased financial assistance for flood-hit families in several Upper Assam districts. The party has particularly highlighted the impact of the floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. Protesters said many affected families were still waiting for adequate assistance to rebuild damaged homes, agricultural land and other property.
Gogoi has sought compensation of Rs 10 lakh for families whose homes or property were destroyed in the floods, along with additional support for affected businesses and households. He has also demanded a detailed assessment of the losses before compensation is distributed. The Raijor Dal leader has previously called for an inquiry into factors that may have contributed to the severity of the flooding.

Police intervened when protesters attempted to move closer to the Chief Minister's residence and detained several demonstrators. Those taken into custody included Raijor Dal leaders and members of its allied organisations. Authorities subsequently removed the protesters from the area and brought the situation under control, while security personnel remained deployed around the residence.
The latest demonstration is part of a series of protests organised by Gogoi and the Raijor Dal over flood relief. Gogoi had earlier staged an indefinite protest at the Assam Assembly premises, demanding time-bound disbursement of compensation. He has argued that the state government should address the concerns of affected residents as an administrative responsibility rather than treat the issue as a political dispute.
The protests have kept the issue of flood rehabilitation in Assam at the centre of political debate, with the opposition demanding faster financial assistance and longer-term rebuilding measures. The state government has been assessing the damage caused by the floods and the resources required for rehabilitation. The latest demonstration outside the Chief Minister's residence has added to pressure on the administration to address the demands of flood-affected communities.
