Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered an inquiry after several villagers reportedly fell ill following the distribution of anti-malaria medication in Gollaguppa village in Polavaram district. The incident came to light after reports that a girl died following an alleged adverse reaction to a chloroquine tablet. Naidu reviewed the situation and directed officials to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The medicines were reportedly distributed to 71 people in the village as part of an anti-malaria initiative. Following the distribution, some residents developed health complications and required medical attention. Of those affected, 29 people were taken to Bhadrachalam Area Hospital, while another 24 were being treated at the Lakshmipuram Primary Health Centre, according to the information provided by officials.

Naidu spoke to senior officials of the Health and Medical Department and the district Collector late on Tuesday to obtain details of the incident. He sought information about the distribution of the tablets, the health condition of those who became ill and the reported death. The Chief Minister instructed officials to examine the circumstances carefully and ensure that the affected villagers receive appropriate medical care.

The reported death has raised concerns over the circumstances in which the anti-malaria tablets were administered and the response after villagers developed symptoms. While the girl was reported to have reacted adversely after taking chloroquine, the precise cause of her death and the role of the medication would need to be established through an official medical investigation. Authorities are expected to examine medical records and other relevant details as part of the inquiry.

The Chief Minister directed the Health and Medical Department and district administration to provide the best possible treatment to those affected. Medical teams are continuing to monitor the condition of patients receiving care at the two health facilities. Officials are also expected to gather information from the remaining villagers who received the medicine to determine whether they experienced any adverse effects.

The government’s inquiry is expected to establish what happened during and after the distribution of the anti-malaria tablets and whether proper medical protocols were followed. Authorities will also assess the circumstances surrounding the reported death and the illness of other residents.
