Nepalese authorities on Wednesday urged people living in central, western and eastern parts of the country to remain alert after water levels in three major rivers crossed alert levels amid continued rainfall. The warning was issued as the monsoon remains active across several parts of Nepal, including Kathmandu. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority advised people in downstream areas to take precautions as the risk of flooding remains high.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the Sun Koshi River in Sindhuli district, the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha and the Mahakali River in Dadeldhura were above their alert levels as of 6 AM on September 2. The development has prompted authorities to closely monitor river conditions in multiple regions. Residents living in low-lying areas near the rivers have been advised to remain particularly cautious.
The division had also reported on Tuesday that the Marsyangdi River in Lamjung district crossed the danger mark at the Bhukundebesi water level monitoring centre at 11:15 PM. The latest information indicated that the river’s water level was continuing to rise. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as increasing water flow could raise the possibility of flooding in areas downstream.
