Maruti Suzuki is developing a new compact SUV aimed at competing with the highly successful Tata Punch in what is seen as a long-awaited move to strengthen its presence in the entry-level SUV segment. The upcoming model is expected to be launched within the next two years and could emerge as the brand’s new entry-level offering, potentially replacing legacy models like the Alto and M800.
The decision reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences, with a growing number of buyers opting for SUV-styled vehicles even at lower price points. Maruti Suzuki itself has witnessed a rise in its SUV market share, increasing from 16.8 per cent to 19.6 per cent in FY26. This trend has prompted the automaker to align its product strategy with evolving demand, particularly among first-time car buyers seeking a blend of affordability, design, and features.
The new vehicle is expected to feature an upright SUV-inspired design along with a strong emphasis on modern features and practicality. In terms of powertrain options, the company has indicated that the model will be available with multiple choices, including mild-hybrid, CNG/CBG, and flex-fuel variants, highlighting its push toward diversified and sustainable mobility solutions.

Industry expectations suggest that the new SUV could coexist alongside hatchbacks such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift, rather than replacing them entirely. This strategy mirrors Maruti’s current approach with models like the Fronx and Baleno, where both cater to slightly different customer preferences within a similar price bracket.
Despite the declining popularity of traditional hatchbacks, the Swift remains one of Maruti Suzuki’s most iconic models and continues to enjoy strong brand loyalty. The company is therefore expected to retain it while introducing the new SUV as an additional option to capture a wider customer base.
With increasing competition in the subcompact SUV space and the proven success of rivals like the Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming offering is likely to play a crucial role in reshaping the entry-level car segment, particularly as buyers continue to prioritise style, versatility, and multiple fuel options.
