Tension gripped parts of Asansol in West Bengal on Friday night after a protest over the volume of a mosque loudspeaker allegedly turned violent, leading to stone-pelting and vandalism at a local police station. According to preliminary information, the incident took place near the Jahangiri Mohalla police station after police personnel reportedly approached mosque authorities following a complaint regarding loudspeaker volume. The situation escalated quickly as residents gathered outside the police station to protest against the police action.
Local residents said officers had requested mosque authorities lower the loudspeaker volume after receiving a complaint from the area. The move reportedly angered a section of locals, who assembled near the police station demanding an explanation from the authorities. Witnesses claimed the protest initially remained verbal, but the atmosphere became tense as the crowd size increased and arguments intensified between protesters and police personnel deployed at the scene.
The protest later turned violent when some individuals allegedly began pelting stones and bricks at the police station building. Several portions of the police facility reportedly suffered damage during the unrest, including windows and exterior structures. Police vehicles parked within the premises, along with motorcycles in the surrounding area, were also vandalized. Visuals circulating on social media showed damaged vehicles and shattered glass, including the front windshield of an auto-rickshaw parked near the site.

Authorities responded by deploying a heavy police force in Jahangiri Mohalla and nearby localities to prevent further escalation. Senior police officers reportedly reached the area shortly after the violence broke out and began efforts to restore normalcy. Security personnel conducted patrols through sensitive pockets of the locality while monitoring the situation closely to ensure that the unrest did not spread to adjoining neighborhoods.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether any arrests were made in connection with the violence or whether any police personnel or civilians were injured during the clashes. Police are expected to review CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to identify those involved in the attack on the police station. Authorities are also likely to investigate the circumstances surrounding the original complaint regarding the loudspeaker volume that triggered the confrontation.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the sensitive nature of disputes involving religious institutions and public order in densely populated urban areas. Asansol, an industrial city in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, has witnessed sporadic communal tensions in the past, prompting authorities to maintain heightened vigilance during sensitive situations. Police officials said additional forces would remain deployed in the affected area until the situation stabilizes completely and normal public movement resumes.
