A 21-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by five men in a village under the Hamirpur city police station area on Tuesday night, police reported on Wednesday.
The assault occurred when the woman had stepped out to a field to relieve herself, according to her complaint. An FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and one suspect has been detained as the investigation continues.
The victim was admitted to a local hospital, where her condition is reported as stable. Police are actively pursuing the remaining four accused, with teams analyzing CCTV footage and conducting raids based on initial leads. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with locals demanding swift justice.

Hamirpur SP Hemraj Meena assured that the case is a priority, stating, “We are committed to apprehending all culprits soon.” The attack underscores ongoing concerns about women’s safety in rural Uttar Pradesh, where similar cases have drawn national attention. In 2024, the state reported 2,106 rape cases, per NCRB data, highlighting the urgency for stronger preventive measures.
Women’s rights activists have called for enhanced patrolling and awareness campaigns in villages. As the police intensify their efforts, the victim’s family has been provided security, and counseling services are being offered to support her recovery.
