Three individuals were arrested in Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, for the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl near Manabum Nala on July 18, police confirmed Tuesday. Acting on a complaint from the victim’s relative, a team led by Inspector Ongsa Ronrang apprehended the accused—identified as Sanjay Munda (22), Anil Munda (24), and Rajesh Tanti (21), all local residents—during night raids in Shillong Pahar, Manabum, and Kamakhyapur.
Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu stated that cases were registered at Diyun police station under Section 70(2) (gang rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The accused are in 14-day judicial custody at Changlang district jail, with investigations ongoing to determine if others were involved.
The survivor underwent a medical examination at Diyun Community Health Centre, revealing injuries consistent with assault. She is now safe at a Child Care Institute in Namsai for counseling and protection, with her identity withheld per legal provisions. The incident has sparked local outrage, with community leaders demanding swift justice and stricter measures against rising sexual violence in the region.
