Punjab Police have detained a 24-year-old software engineer, Shubam Dubey, from Faridabad, Haryana, for allegedly sending five threatening emails to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) warning of bomb attacks on the Golden Temple since July 14. Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar announced the detention at a press conference, describing it as a “partial success” in an ongoing investigation involving Punjab’s cybercrime wing and central intelligence agencies.
Dubey, a BTech graduate with no prior criminal record, had his laptop and phone seized for forensic examination. While he has not been arrested, Bhullar indicated that the probe is advancing, with more breakthroughs expected soon. The emails, which mentioned RDX blasts, prompted heightened security around the Golden Temple, including bomb disposal squads and SGPC task forces.
SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed alarm, questioning whether the threats stem from a troubled individual or a larger conspiracy aimed at instilling fear among the shrine’s devotees. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, after meeting senior police officials, including DGP Gaurav Yadav, urged the public to stay vigilant and avoid rumors, reaffirming the state’s commitment to security.
