A 23-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after leaping from a moving Multi Modal Transport Service (MMTS) train in Hyderabad to escape an alleged rape attempt by an unidentified man.
The harrowing incident occurred on the evening of March 22 in the ladies’ coach of the train traveling from Secunderabad to Medchal, the Government Railway Police (GRP) reported on Monday.
According to the victim’s statement to police on Sunday, she was alone in the coach after two female co-passengers alighted at Alwal railway station. A man, estimated to be around 25 years old, approached her, demanded sexual favors, and attempted to assault her when she resisted.
In a desperate bid to escape, she jumped from the moving train, suffering bleeding injuries to her head, chin, right hand, and waist. Passersby later found her and rushed her to a state-run hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
The woman, a private sector employee who had traveled to Secunderabad that day to repair her mobile phone, told police she could identify the assailant if she saw him again. Based on her complaint, the GRP has registered a case under Sections 75 (assault with intent to outrage modesty) and 131 (use of criminal force) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Authorities have launched an investigation to trace the suspect, with efforts underway to review CCTV footage and gather witness accounts from the train route. The incident has sparked renewed concerns over women’s safety on public transport in the city.
