The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Pawan Kumar Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh, two accused in the 2022 murder case of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. The decision came after the two men challenged an earlier order by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had refused to grant them bail. The High Court had earlier ruled that bail could not be considered until the statements of eyewitnesses in the case were recorded.
During the hearing before the Supreme Court, counsel representing Pawan Kumar Bishnoi argued that his client had been wrongly associated with the case due to a similarity in name with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Advocate Abhay Kumar submitted that Pawan’s alleged involvement was primarily based on a confession in a separate criminal case from which he has since been cleared. He also stated that investigators had not found any evidence linking Pawan to the vehicle that was allegedly used in the murder.
The defence further highlighted that the case involves around 180 witnesses and that Pawan Bishnoi had already spent more than three and a half years in custody. His lawyer argued that prolonged detention without substantial evidence justified granting bail. Meanwhile, counsel for Jagtar Singh told the court that his client had no role in the planning or execution of the murder and was merely a neighbour with no involvement in the crime.
