Ten newly elected members of the Bihar Legislative Council were sworn in on Wednesday at a formal ceremony held in the main hall of the Legislative Council Annexe in Patna. With the oath-taking completed, all members have officially begun their tenure in the Upper House of the state legislature, marking the latest addition to Bihar’s political leadership structure.
The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council Awadhesh Narayan Singh. The newly inducted members include representatives from both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Mahagathbandhan, reflecting a mix of political affiliations in the Upper House.
From the Janata Dal (United), members Nishant Kumar, Bharti Mehta, Shivrani Devi Prajapati and Lalan Prasad took oath, while from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), actor-turned-politician Pawan Singh, Sanjay Prakash Mayukh, Anil Thakur and Sheila Pandit were sworn in. Representatives from other parties, including Ashraf Ansari of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and Sunil Kumar Singh of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, also took oath.

The ceremony was attended by several senior leaders from across the political spectrum, including Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, and Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav. Leaders from different parties congratulated the new members and expressed hope that the Upper House would see productive legislative proceedings.
After taking oath, Pawan Singh said he would work towards the establishment of a Film City in Bihar to boost employment opportunities for local artists and support the state’s cultural and entertainment sector. He said such an initiative would help aspiring performers build careers within the state rather than moving elsewhere for opportunities.
Meanwhile, Nishant Kumar expressed gratitude to the Janata Dal (United) leadership for entrusting him with responsibilities in both the Cabinet and the Legislative Council. He said he would work with commitment to further development programmes associated with the state government’s “Saat Nishchay” initiative and described his induction into the same House where his father once served as a matter of pride.
RJD leader Sunil Kumar Singh said he would focus on raising issues related to farmers, economically weaker sections, and common citizens in the Legislative Council. Other members also expressed their commitment to public service, with first-time MLC Ashraf Ansari describing his election as a significant moment for grassroots workers and pledging to uphold the trust placed in him by party leadership and supporters.
