A Bhopal court on Saturday sent Samarth Singh, husband of Twisha Sharma and the prime accused in her death case, to seven days of police custody, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing investigation. The court also directed Singh to surrender his passport, following his recent arrest and earlier lookout notice issued by police. Authorities had announced a reward of ₹30,000 for information leading to his arrest after he allegedly evaded custody for several days.
Samarth Singh, a practising lawyer, was produced before the court after being taken into custody by Bhopal Police on Friday. He had reportedly appeared at the Jabalpur District Court in an attempt to surrender, but the proceedings took a different turn when police took him into custody and transferred him to Bhopal. Investigators allege that Singh had been absconding since May 12, the day Twisha Sharma was found dead at her in-laws’ residence, raising questions about his movements during this period.
During the hearing, police sought seven days of custodial remand, arguing that intensive interrogation was necessary to trace Singh’s whereabouts during his time on the run, identify individuals who may have assisted him, and recover potential evidence linked to the case. Investigators also stated that his custody was essential for conducting spot verification and collecting supplementary statements that could help reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the incident.

The legal proceedings saw strong arguments from both sides. Advocate Ankur Pandey, representing Twisha Sharma’s family, supported the police request, stressing that custodial interrogation was crucial to establish a complete chain of evidence. On the other hand, Singh’s defence counsel, Advocate Enos George Carlo, opposed the demand, claiming that most evidence had already been collected and that extended custody was unnecessary. Despite these objections, the court accepted the prosecution’s arguments and granted the remand.
Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar stated that any individuals found to have sheltered the accused during his absconding period would face legal action. He also noted that Singh’s attempt to surrender in Jabalpur did not proceed as expected, after which police took him into custody. The case has drawn attention due to allegations of procedural delays, possible influence linked to the accused’s background, and scrutiny over the role of his family, including his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh.
The court’s decision comes after Singh withdrew his anticipatory bail plea from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, a move that coincided with increased pressure from investigators. Observers noted that his appearance in court appeared composed, even as the proceedings unfolded amid heightened tension and objections from the victim’s legal representatives. The case continues to develop as police begin intensive interrogation during the seven-day custody period.
