A man attempting to set his elder brother's house on fire in Karnataka's Govindapura village ended up suffering serious burn injuries himself after the blaze spread uncontrollably, police reported on January 8, 2026. The accused, identified as Muniraju, carried out the act around midnight with the motive of revenge, according to investigators.
CCTV footage installed at the house captured the entire sequence of events. Muniraju first locked the main door from the outside to trap anyone who might be inside. He then poured petrol around the premises and attempted to ignite it. However, the fire flared up suddenly and more violently than anticipated. Petrol that had spilled onto his hands and clothes during the process quickly caught fire, engulfing Muniraju himself in the flames.
The accused sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police confirmed that no one else was present in the house at the time of the incident, preventing any further casualties. The property suffered significant damage before the fire could be brought under control.

The case has been registered at the local police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempted arson and endangering life. Authorities are investigating the exact nature of the dispute between the brothers that led to this extreme act of revenge.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of handling flammable substances during acts of arson, where perpetrators often become unintended victims due to accidental spillage or rapid spread of fire. Police have urged the public to report any family disputes early to prevent such tragic outcomes. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
