Punjab has emerged as one of India’s top-performing states in school education, overtaking Kerala in several learning indicators according to the latest NITI Aayog Education Quality Report 2026. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains described the achievement as the beginning of “Punjab’s Era” and credited the progress to systematic reforms introduced by the Aam Aadmi Party-led government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Sharing details from the report, Bains stated that Punjab recorded 82 per cent proficiency in language and 78 per cent in mathematics among Class 3 students, outperforming Kerala’s scores of 75 per cent and 70 per cent, respectively. He also highlighted Punjab’s performance in secondary education, noting that the state achieved 52 per cent proficiency in Class 9 mathematics compared to Kerala’s 45 per cent. The minister said the results reflected sustained policy implementation and investments in the government school system.
Bains dedicated the recognition to students, teachers, and parents who continued to support government schools despite longstanding challenges. He said the achievement was not the result of a short-term effort but the outcome of coordinated policy decisions, administrative execution, and educational reforms carried out over several years. According to the minister, Punjab’s education model has focused heavily on strengthening infrastructure, improving classroom environments, upgrading teacher training, and enhancing student learning outcomes.

The Punjab government has in recent years introduced several reforms in the education sector, including the modernisation of school infrastructure, the establishment of Schools of Eminence, international training exposure for teachers, and the implementation of updated teaching methods. Officials have repeatedly claimed that these initiatives were designed to revive confidence in government schools and reduce disparities in educational quality between public and private institutions across the state.
Kerala has traditionally been regarded as one of India’s strongest states in education due to its high literacy rates, robust public education system, and strong social development indicators. Punjab’s reported rise above Kerala in certain learning outcomes is therefore being viewed as a significant development in the national education landscape. However, education experts often caution that rankings and performance indicators should be interpreted alongside broader factors such as access, dropout rates, long-term learning quality, and socio-economic context.
The latest report is expected to intensify discussions around state-level education reforms and governance models across India. Punjab officials believe the recognition will further encourage investment and confidence in the public education system, while opposition parties and independent observers may continue to examine the long-term sustainability of the reforms. The findings have nevertheless provided a major political and administrative boost to the Punjab government’s education agenda ahead of future policy discussions and evaluations.
