A violent altercation at a Puducherry pub turned fatal on Sunday, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man from Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, and the arrest of six pub workers, including the owner, police reported. The incident, which erupted during a birthday celebration, has sparked outrage and raised questions about pub regulations in the Union Territory.
According to the Grand Bazaar Station police, a group visiting the pub to celebrate a friend’s birthday clashed with staff members. The confrontation escalated, with one worker allegedly stabbing the victim, inflicting critical injuries. Another group member was assaulted with a stick and kitchen utensils. The stabbed man was rushed to a government hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Under the oversight of Deputy Inspector General of Police Sathiyasundaram and Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) R Kalaivanan, a special investigation team has been formed to track down five additional suspects linked to the murder. The police are moving swiftly to uncover the full circumstances of the incident.

Former Chief Minister V Narayanasamy called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, slamming the proliferation of “resto bars” in Puducherry. He criticized the issuance of pub licenses in residential areas near schools and religious sites, calling it a growing “menace” that demands stricter oversight. Local residents echoed concerns, urging authorities to review licensing policies to prevent such tragedies.
