Police have filed a detailed 600-page chargesheet in the alleged assassination attempt on National Conference chairman Farooq Abdullah, describing the attack as a “pre-planned and premeditated” attempt to kill the senior political leader. The chargesheet was submitted on Friday before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Jammu, marking a major development in the high-profile case.
The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, is currently lodged in District Jail, Ambphalla, Jammu. Investigators stated in the chargesheet that the accused had developed long-standing hostility against Abdullah, allegedly holding him responsible for political developments in Jammu and Kashmir, including issues related to militancy and the displacement of Kashmiri Pandits during the 1990s.
According to the police report, the accused’s actions were not spontaneous but the result of prolonged planning spanning nearly two decades. Officials claimed that Singh harboured deep resentment and had allegedly formed a personal vendetta against Abdullah, whom he blamed for historical and political grievances. The chargesheet asserts that this animosity ultimately culminated in a deliberate attempt to target the former chief minister.

The investigation further states that the accused arrived at the incident location with the specific intention of carrying out the attack. Police said the evidence collected, including seized weapons and forensic analysis, supports the conclusion that the act was intentional and carefully planned. The report also describes the firing incident as a direct attempt on Abdullah’s life rather than an accidental discharge.
A video that emerged from the incident on March 11, 2026, reportedly shows Kamal Singh pointing a revolver toward Abdullah during a public event. Security personnel intervened quickly, pushing the accused aside before he could fire, causing the bullet to discharge into the air. The prompt action of security officials is believed to have prevented a fatal outcome.
A case was earlier registered at Police Station Gangyal, Jammu, under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 3/25/30 of the Arms Act. Authorities continue to examine the broader circumstances surrounding the incident, while judicial proceedings are expected to move forward based on the detailed chargesheet submitted by investigators.
