Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sushila Karki on Saturday for taking office as Nepal’s interim prime minister. In a post on X, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering peace, progress, and prosperity for Nepal, highlighting the deep ties between the two nations. Karki’s appointment marks a historic milestone as she becomes Nepal’s first female prime minister, leading an interim government during a period of political transition.
On Friday, President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office to Karki, 73, at the President’s Office in Kathmandu. Her appointment follows the abrupt resignation of former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, prompted by widespread protests that underscored public frustration with governance issues. Karki, a former chief justice known for her anti-corruption stance, steps into the role to guide Nepal through this interim phase.
Karki served as Nepal’s first female chief justice from 2016 to 2017, earning acclaim for her efforts to combat corruption in a nation where such issues have long persisted. Born in 1952 in Shankarpur village to a farming family, she holds a master’s degree in political science, bringing a wealth of experience to her new role. Her leadership is seen as a stabilising force amid recent unrest driven by Gen Z-led demonstrations.
The interim government under Karki is tasked with restoring political stability and preparing for future elections. Modi’s swift message of support reflects India’s interest in Nepal’s democratic process and regional stability, reinforcing the strong diplomatic relationship between the two countries. Karki’s tenure is expected to prioritise governance reforms and public trust.
