A 35-year-old police constable with the Quick Response Team (QRT) in Amravati died by suicide on Thursday morning, March 26, 2026, by shooting himself with his service pistol inside the QRT office at the Police Commissionerate premises.
Vijay Dilip Nagapure, a native of Dhamangaon Katpur in Morshi taluka, had joined the 2014 batch of the police force and was unmarried while residing in Amravati city. He had just completed his night duty shift around 9:00 AM when the incident occurred. Fellow QRT constable Akash Dilip Ambarte discovered the situation and alerted senior officials, triggering an immediate response from the department.
Police Commissioner Rakesh Ola, along with Deputy Commissioners Ganesh Shinde and Shyam Ghuge, rushed to the scene. A forensic team and dog squad were deployed to examine the office, where a bullet was recovered from Nagapure's head wound. His body was sent to the District General Hospital for post-mortem to aid the investigation.

In what may have been his final conversation, Nagapure called his brother Shyam Nagapure, also a city police officer, shortly before the act. He mentioned, “There is a crowd at the petrol pump; I will fill petrol and then return home,” before ending the call. No suicide note was reported, and the motive remains unclear.
Authorities are probing all possible angles, including personal or professional stressors common in high-pressure policing roles like the QRT Super Rapid Squad. Such incidents highlight ongoing challenges in India's law enforcement, where mental health support has gained attention amid rising suicide cases among personnel—over 200 reported annually in recent years, per National Crime Records Bureau data.
The tragedy has left the Amravati police department in mourning, with colleagues grieving the loss of a dedicated officer. Officials have pledged a thorough inquiry to determine the circumstances and prevent future occurrences.
