Around 8:45 pm, a white car in Sanpada was spotted with a human hand dangling from its trunk, captured in viral photos and videos online. Fearing a kidnapping or murder, a bystander alerted Sanpada police, prompting a swift response.
Police tracked the vehicle and detained the driver and three others, including a Koparkhairne laptop shop owner orchestrating the stunt. The group confessed to staging the scene for a promotional reel to drive laptop sales, aiming to grab attention with dramatic flair. “They admitted it was meant to go viral, but didn’t clarify how it tied to their business,” an official from Navi Mumbai’s crime branch said.
The shocking visual of a hand protruding from the trunk caused public alarm, with posts on X amplifying the chaos before police clarified it was a hoax. “This was reckless,” the official added. “Chasing social media fame shouldn’t sow fear or disrupt order.” The four face charges under section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act for rash driving, with further inquiries ongoing to assess additional violations.
