Police in Khandwa have arrested a man accused of carrying out a series of burglaries targeting the homes of police personnel across the state, allegedly to settle a long-standing personal grudge. The suspect, identified as Deepesh from Alirajpur, is believed to be involved in at least 16 theft cases, officials said.
The arrest followed an investigation into a burglary reported at the police lines in Khandwa on January 20. According to police, the homes of constables Karanpal Singh and Suresh Khate were broken into during the night, with jewellery and cash worth several lakh rupees stolen. CCTV footage from the area helped investigators identify the accused, and authorities have since recovered ₹30,000 in cash along with some jewellery items.
Police teams launched a multi-district search operation spanning Jhabua, Alirajpur, and Dhar, noting that the suspect frequently changed locations to evade arrest. Acting on technical surveillance inputs, officers tracked him while he was reportedly travelling towards Burhanpur. During the arrest attempt, the accused allegedly tried to escape by jumping from a rooftop and sustained injuries to his arm and leg.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment before being produced in a local court in Khandwa and remanded to judicial custody. Additional Superintendent of Police Mahendra Tarnekar described the arrest as a significant breakthrough and said further questioning is underway to trace other linked cases and possible associates.
Investigators claim the accused confessed to deliberately targeting police households, allegedly motivated by an incident about 15 years ago in which he was beaten by a policeman in Alirajpur. Police also allege that he conducted reconnaissance by posing as a street vendor near police lines before carrying out the burglaries at night. Two suspected accomplices, identified as Ramesh and Bhuraliya, remain absconding and are being actively searched.
