A sessions court in Madhya Pradesh has acquitted 11 men accused in connection with the communal violence that broke out in Khargone during Ram Navami processions in April 2022, after the prosecution failed to establish its case. The court observed that the evidence presented was insufficient to secure convictions, with several key eyewitnesses failing to identify the accused and forensic findings not supporting allegations related to the use of petrol bombs or explosive substances. The judgment marks a significant development in one of the major cases arising from the violence.

The case stemmed from the communal clashes that erupted in Khargone on April 10, 2022, during Ram Navami processions. According to the prosecution, armed mobs allegedly attacked houses in the Bhatwadi locality between 6 pm and 9 pm, pelting stones, wielding weapons and setting homes and motorcycles on fire. Authorities had alleged that petrol bombs were used during the violence, which resulted in widespread property damage and heightened communal tensions across the district.

During the trial, however, the prosecution's case weakened considerably. Of the 11 eyewitnesses presented before the court, eight failed to identify any of the accused as participants in the alleged offences. In addition, forensic laboratory reports did not establish the presence of petrol bombs or any explosive material at the scene, undermining one of the prosecution's principal allegations. The court concluded that the available evidence was inadequate to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

In its judgment, the sessions court held that criminal convictions must be based on reliable and credible evidence rather than suspicion or uncorroborated allegations. With key witnesses either turning hostile or failing to identify the accused, and forensic evidence not supporting crucial aspects of the prosecution's case, the court ruled that the accused were entitled to the benefit of doubt. Consequently, all 11 men were acquitted of the charges brought against them in this case.

The Khargone violence in April 2022 had triggered a major law-and-order response and led to multiple criminal cases, arrests and administrative action. The incidents also attracted national attention after authorities carried out demolition drives targeting structures allegedly linked to some of the accused, sparking legal and political debate over the government's response. Several investigations and court proceedings related to the violence continue separately.

The acquittal applies only to the specific case decided by the sessions court and does not affect other criminal cases arising from the 2022 Khargone violence. Legal experts note that each case will continue to be assessed independently based on the evidence presented before the respective courts. The judgment underscores the importance of witness testimony and forensic evidence in securing convictions in serious criminal prosecutions.
