Thane police have arrested a mother-son duo, Puja Dilip Gupta (45) and Ganesh Dilip Gupta (20), for a series of house-breaking thefts, recovering gold, silver, and cash worth Rs 11 lakh. The arrests, announced on July 25, 2025, followed a meticulous investigation triggered by a July 13 complaint of stolen ornaments valued at Rs 7.99 lakh from a Naupada residence.
Senior Inspector Abhay Mahajan of Naupada police station revealed that CCTV footage captured a woman and two children at the crime scene, with a young girl retrieving tools from a backpack. Analysis of over 100 city cameras tracked the woman’s movements across Thane railway station, Talavpali, and Chandanwadi, revealing her deliberate route changes to evade surveillance. Using technical intelligence and informers, police zeroed in on Diva village, apprehending Ganesh near Diva creek on July 17 after a brief chase. His interrogation implicated his mother, Puja, in orchestrating the burglaries.
The duo planned to sell stolen gold and silver to bullion dealers in Mumbai and Thane to fund relocation to other districts. Police seized 100 grams of gold ornaments, 2.5 kilograms of silver articles, Rs 40,000 in cash, and other items, totaling Rs 10.99 lakh. A case has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 305 (theft in a dwelling house) and 331(3)(4) (house-trespass or housebreaking).
