The Maharashtra Cyber Department has alleged that it uncovered a coordinated online disinformation campaign linked to the ongoing CJP protests, identifying more than 500 social media profiles and hundreds of objectionable posts during its investigation. According to the agency, the campaign involved the large-scale dissemination of misleading content across major digital platforms with the objective of influencing public opinion and creating confusion during the protests. The claims form part of an ongoing investigation, and authorities have said further inquiries are underway.

Officials stated that investigators identified over 500 social media profiles and examined 429 objectionable posts that were allegedly connected to the campaign. Based on technical analysis, the department claimed that around 100 of the accounts were operated from Pakistan and parts of the Middle East. According to the agency, these accounts were allegedly used to circulate misleading material intended to fuel unrest, distort public perception and amplify misinformation surrounding the protests.

The investigation also alleged extensive use of artificial intelligence and advanced digital manipulation techniques. Maharashtra Cyber said more than 140 posts contained deepfake videos, cloned audio recordings, synthetic voice clips and digitally enhanced crowd visuals that were allegedly designed to make fabricated or misleading content appear authentic. Officials said such techniques were used to increase the credibility and reach of false narratives circulating on social media platforms.

According to the department, the network was identified through large-scale Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), behavioural analysis and specialised audio and video forensic examinations. These methods were used to detect coordinated online activity and trace patterns linking multiple accounts and posts. Officials said the investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the full scope of the alleged operation and identify any additional individuals or entities involved.

The Maharashtra Cyber Department said it has initiated legal proceedings against those allegedly connected to the campaign and has approached social media platforms to remove the identified content. Authorities stated that they are continuing to collect digital evidence while coordinating with relevant intermediaries as part of the ongoing probe. No further details regarding arrests or specific legal actions have been disclosed at this stage.

Issuing a public advisory, the department urged citizens to verify information before sharing it online and to avoid amplifying unverified or misleading content. It appealed to social media users to "Pause, Verify, and Share Responsibly," stressing that responsible online behaviour is essential to maintaining public order and limiting the spread of misinformation. The investigation remains ongoing, and the department has said additional findings may emerge as the probe progresses.
