Manojit Yadav was fatally stabbed by a friend during an altercation at Dakshineswar Metro Station in Kolkata on Friday afternoon, police reported. The incident, which occurred in a non-ticketing area near the station’s entry gate, caused panic among commuters and raised questions about security measures in the city’s Metro system.
Manojit, a student at Bagbazar High School from Baranagar, was waiting at the station when an argument with a friend escalated. According to a senior police officer, another friend allegedly stabbed Manojit with a knife. Despite being rushed to a hospital, the teenager succumbed to his injuries en route. Police have launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage to determine how the assailant brought a weapon into the Metro premises, a designated high-security zone.
The incident has spotlighted potential lapses in passenger screening and surveillance. A Metro Railway spokesperson clarified that the stabbing occurred outside the turnstile gate, near the Dakshineshwar temple end, an area not subject to the same stringent checks as the platform. The spokesperson noted that while metal detectors are used at turnstile gates, monitoring every individual in non-ticketing areas is challenging for Railway Protection Force personnel.
