Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday shared a new video alleging that Congress MPs entered Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s chamber, abused him, and threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi during last week’s confrontation in Parliament. The development marks a further escalation in the political row that erupted after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was stopped from reading excerpts from former Army chief General M.M. Naravane’s book in the House.
Rijiju claimed the nine-second clip was “illegally” recorded by a Congress MP and showed 20–25 opposition lawmakers inside the Speaker’s chamber. “This is the illegal video clip taken by a Congress MP… when 20–25 Congress MPs entered the chamber of the Speaker, abused him, and threatened the Prime Minister. Our party believes in debate and discussion and never encourages MPs to threaten physically,” he said in a post accompanying the video. The footage shows several opposition MPs gathered around the Speaker’s desk, speaking loudly, while BJP members stand to one side.
The minister’s latest remarks follow an earlier video he shared on Tuesday, which he said depicted Congress MPs engaging in “the most degrading behaviour” inside the Lok Sabha. That clip showed a group of women Congress MPs standing near the Prime Minister’s seat with a banner, refusing to move despite objections from BJP lawmakers. Rijiju had then claimed that BJP MPs restrained themselves to avoid a physical confrontation and preserve the dignity of Parliament.

According to Rijiju, the standoff was “unprecedented and unparliamentary” and prompted the Speaker to advise the Prime Minister, who was scheduled to address the House, to cancel his speech. Speaker Om Birla later stated that he had received “information” suggesting that the protesting MPs were “planning something”, though he did not elaborate.
The controversy stems from Rahul Gandhi’s attempt to read excerpts from General Naravane’s book Four Stars of Destiny, which references the 2020 Ladakh border tensions with China. The opposition has accused the Speaker of bias in disallowing the remarks, intensifying friction between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress.
In a further escalation, opposition parties have moved a no-confidence motion against Speaker Birla. Parliamentary sources, however, indicated that the notice may not be admitted due to a reported clerical error. The episode has added to the growing acrimony in the current session, with both sides trading sharp allegations over parliamentary conduct and decorum.
