A.D. Thomas, a Youth Congress leader, has been elected as the new MLA from Alappuzha, marking a significant political shift in a constituency long considered a stronghold of the Left. He defeated sitting MLA P.P. Chitharanjan by a margin of 21,015 votes, turning a closely watched contest into a notable electoral upset.
Thomas’s victory carries strong symbolic weight, as his political journey has been shaped by both activism and personal hardship. Not long ago, he was at the centre of a political controversy during the Nava Kerala Yatra of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, when he was seen injured during street protests—an incident that drew public attention and opposition criticism at the time. His supporters have since framed the moment as emblematic of his grassroots political identity.
The 30-year-old leader comes from Mararikulam North in Alappuzha district, where he was raised in a modest household by his parents Dominic Jackson and Akkamma. His father’s work as a fish seller supported the family, and Thomas is reported to have spent parts of his childhood accompanying him to sea, experiences that shaped his understanding of struggle and survival.

From an early age, Thomas became involved in student politics and gradually emerged as a visible figure in protests and youth-led campaigns. His activism included agitations over education-related issues such as exam paper irregularities and shortages of Plus One seats, which helped him build recognition within Congress-affiliated student and youth organisations.
Over time, his public image shifted from that of a student activist to a full-fledged political candidate, with the Congress placing him in a high-stakes contest in Alappuzha. His campaign focused heavily on local governance issues, employment concerns, and public service delivery, positioning him as a representative of younger political voices in the state.
As he prepares to enter the Kerala Assembly as an MLA, Thomas’s journey is being viewed by supporters as a transition from street-level protest to legislative responsibility. Political observers note that his win not only signals a generational shift in parts of Kerala politics but also reflects voter responsiveness to personal narratives rooted in resilience and lived experience.
