A senior civil police officer in Kerala, Shanti Krishnan, has been suspended and charged with embezzling over Rs 16 lakh from traffic fines collected at Muvattupuzha police station between 2018 and 2022. The officer faces charges of forgery, cheating, criminal breach of trust, and violations under the Prevention of Corruption Act, as per an FIR filed on July 21.
Krishnan, who served as an assistant station writer, allegedly manipulated cash book entries and fine receipts to underreport collected amounts, pocketing Rs 16,76,650. A senior district police officer explained that her role involved recording fines and depositing them into the police account, but she falsified figures to siphon off the difference.
The fraud was uncovered during routine internal audits, with further investigation confirming the embezzlement. Krishnan now faces a criminal case, a departmental probe, and disciplinary action.
