A third-year female student from Jadavpur University’s English department was declared dead on Thursday night after being found unconscious near a pond on the campus in Kolkata, university officials reported. The incident, which occurred during a cultural programme organised by the Students’ Federation of India, has raised concerns about campus safety, with police suspecting drowning as the cause of death.
The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly chatting with classmates near the pond by Gate No. 4 before she was found unresponsive around 10:30 p.m. Fellow students and security personnel quickly pulled her from the water and rushed her to KPC Medical College and Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Senior university officials, faculty, and Arts Faculty Students’ Union members visited the hospital, and Jadavpur police were notified, launching an investigation into the circumstances, which remain unclear.
A postmortem examination is underway to determine the exact cause of death, with authorities registering a case of unnatural death. The absence of CCTV cameras near the pond has complicated efforts to understand the incident’s timeline. The tragedy echoes a 2023 incident at Jadavpur, where a first-year Bengali honours student died after falling from a hostel balcony following alleged ragging, sparking widespread outrage and arrests.
