Tension gripped Hyderabad’s Victoria playground on Saturday when Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East Zone) S Chaitanya Kumar fired three rounds at a man suspected of cell phone theft in a dramatic turn of events. The incident unfolded as the DCP and his colleague chased the suspect, who reportedly resisted arrest and turned violent during the confrontation.
According to preliminary reports, the gunman fell while pursuing the suspect, leaving DCP Chaitanya Kumar momentarily unarmed. Sensing an immediate threat, as the suspect allegedly attempted to stab him, the quick-thinking officer seized his colleague’s firearm and discharged three shots at the assailant to neutralize the attack.
The injured suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, and his current condition remains under evaluation. DGP Law and Order Mahesh Bhagwat confirmed that the officer had to open fire in response to the life-threatening situation.
