In a startling twist to an alleged rape case in Pune, police have revealed that the 22-year-old IT professional who claimed she was assaulted by a stranger posing as a courier delivery agent may have fabricated key details. The suspect, now detained, is not a stranger but a friend of the woman, and the incriminating selfie and threatening message were created by the victim herself, according to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar.
The woman had reported that on Wednesday evening, a man entered her Kondhwa flat under the guise of delivering a courier, raped her, and caused her to lose consciousness. She claimed the assailant used her phone to take a selfie—showing her back and part of his face—and left a menacing message threatening to leak her photos online if she reported the incident.
However, investigations have upended her account. The detained suspect, a highly qualified professional known to the woman for years and from the same community, was not a random intruder. Police found that the woman herself took the selfie, edited it to obscure the suspect’s face, and typed the threatening message. Contrary to earlier suspicions, no chemical spray was used to render her unconscious, Kumar clarified.

“The rape allegations are still under investigation,” Kumar said, noting that the woman’s mental state is unstable, and authorities are working to understand her motives for the claims. The case, initially reported as a violent assault by a stranger, has taken a dramatic turn, leaving more questions than answers as the investigation continues.
