A sessions court in Vasai, Maharashtra, remanded Chaman Devi (28) and her paramour Monu Sharma (20) to police custody until July 30 for the murder of Devi’s husband, Vijay Chouhan (34). The duo was arrested in Pune on Tuesday, a day after police exhumed Chouhan’s decomposed body from beneath floor tiles at the couple’s home in Gangnipada, Nallasopara, a distant Mumbai suburb.
Police suspect the pair killed Chouhan around two weeks ago and buried his body to conceal the crime. The murder came to light when Chouhan’s brothers visited the house, noticing a foul smell from the floor. Neighbors reported that Chouhan had been missing since July 10, and Devi had been absent since July 19. Alerted by the brothers, a Pelhar police team, with doctors, forensic experts, and a local tehsildar present, uncovered the body.
A police team tracked Devi and Sharma to Pune, 270 km from Palghar, and apprehended them. The ongoing interrogation aims to uncover the motive and further details of the crime. They face charges under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 103 (murder), 238 (destruction of evidence), and 3(5) (common intention).
The investigation continues to explore the circumstances surrounding this chilling murder case.
