In a horrifying incident in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, 32-year-old Ram Ashish Nishad murdered his 19-year-old sister Neelam, fractured her limbs to conceal the body in a sack, and transported the remains approximately 70 kilometers on a motorcycle before disposing of them in a sugarcane field in Kushinagar district. The crime stemmed from a dispute over Rs 5 lakh in government compensation intended for Neelam’s wedding.
Police recovered the decomposed body late Wednesday night following the accused’s confession. Superintendent of Police (City) Abhinav Tyagi stated that the murder occurred on October 27 while other family members were absent from the residence. Ram Ashish entered the home, strangled Neelam with a cloth, and systematically broke her arms and legs to fit the corpse into a large sack. He then tied the sack to his motorcycle and rode to a secluded field in Kushinagar, where he abandoned it among the crops.
Neelam’s disappearance initially raised no alarm; her father, Chinku Nishad, assumed she had gone to participate in Chhath Puja celebrations. Suspicion arose when neighbors reported seeing Ram Ashish leave with an unusually large sack. CCTV footage corroborated the account, showing him departing with the bundled load secured behind him. Confronted with the evidence, Ram Ashish initially denied involvement but later confessed and guided police to the disposal site.

The motive traces to Rs 5 lakh compensation received by Chinku Nishad for land acquired under a road-widening project. The father had allocated the entire sum for Neelam’s marriage, a decision that enraged Ram Ashish, who insisted on an equal share. Repeated demands were rebuffed, escalating tensions until the fatal confrontation.
The victim’s parents have demanded the death penalty for their son and raised suspicions of his wife’s involvement, alleging she may have instigated the crime. Authorities are examining call records, financial transactions, and statements from family members to determine any complicity.
Forensic examination of the crime scene has yielded the cloth used for strangulation, blood evidence, and DNA samples. The autopsy is underway to confirm cause of death and the extent of post-mortem injuries. Ram Ashish remains in custody as the investigation continues into his financial distress, prior disputes, and mental state.
Local authorities have intensified oversight of land compensation distribution to prevent similar conflicts. Community leaders and women’s organizations have condemned the incident, highlighting the dangers of unchecked familial greed and dowry-related pressures. The case has sent shockwaves through Gorakhpur, underscoring the devastating consequences of unresolved monetary disputes within families.
